There is no single answer to the question "which is the best beach near Manfredonia". It depends on whether you prefer fine sand or rocky coves, whether you have young children, whether you want a sunbed and an ice cream or to bring everything yourself and disappear into a deserted corner of coastline. The Gargano coast, in the stretch south of Vieste overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia, has all of this — at distances ranging from five to forty minutes.
This article follows the coast north from Manfredonia, stop by stop. For each area we describe what to expect, how to get there, and what to bring. The information comes from direct experience: we live and work in Manfredonia and know these beaches in every season.
Manfredonia: Acqua di Cristo
The closest beach to the B&B — literally a few minutes on foot. Acqua di Cristo is a free rocky beach along the Manfredonia seafront, towards the port. Low, comfortable rocks, crystal-clear water even in peak summer, and almost always less crowded than the organised lidos. Ideal for a quick swim without needing to plan an expedition.
Macchia area: four options within a kilometre
Continuing north along the SS89, after about twenty minutes by car you reach the area known as Macchia. Here you find some of the most varied options on the coast: a free rocky cove, two sandy lidos with full services, and two free beaches with paid parking. You can choose based on the mood of the day.
Chiancamasitto — free rocky beach
Chiancamasitto is a small free rocky cove with shallow, transparent water. Parking nearby costs between €3 and €5 in peak season. No facilities: bring everything you need. Ideal for snorkelling or for anyone who wants a quiet spot without lidos and umbrellas.
Lido Macchia and Lido Varcaro — full service on sand
The two organised lidos in the area have sand, umbrellas, sunbeds, showers and a bar. The right choice for families with young children or for a carefree day. Book in advance in July and August.
Punta Rossa and Mare Azzurro — free with parking
Two more free rocky options in the same area. Parking costs around €5. Beautiful water, fewer facilities than the lidos, more privacy. A good balance between convenience and freedom.
Mattinata: the most beautiful coast — and the most crowded
Mattinata is the reference point for beaches on the southern Gargano. The town is inland, but its coast — reachable in about ten minutes by car — offers some of the clearest water on the Adriatic. In exchange, in July and August it fills up considerably. Swimming in the Gargano in May and June explains why June is often the best time to come.
Organised lidos: Tre Torri, Sant'Antonio, Monte Saraceno
Most of the Mattinata coast is occupied by organised lidos. The best known are Lido Tre Torri, Lido Sant'Antonio and Lido Monte Saraceno. All three offer umbrellas, sunbeds, a bar and showers. Booking recommended in peak season.
Free beach near Bar Caratino
For those who prefer to avoid lidos, there is a small free beach near Bar Caratino. It is not signposted, but those who know the area find it easily. Rocky, less comfortable than sandy beaches, but with beautiful water and much more peace and quiet.
The hidden cove
Mattinata also has an almost secret cove, rarely crowded and hard to find without precise directions. It is accessible on foot along a path. Worth the effort: the water is among the best in the area. Ideal for those who enjoy a bit of exploration.
Mattinatella: Cala Rosa and the free stretch
A little further north of Mattinata, Mattinatella is one of the most photographed coves of the Gargano. Cala Rosa has an organised lido — umbrellas, sunbeds, bar — set against white cliffs and turquoise water that makes it feel like the Caribbean. Beside the lido there is also a small free stretch of coast. Plan to arrive early: spaces fill up fast.
Vignanotica: the most spectacular cove
Vignanotica is the destination that Gargano visitors tend to remember most. A cove between tall white cliffs, intensely blue water, white pebble beach. The route to get there — a 20-30 minute descent on a path — keeps crowds lower than easily accessible beaches. But in July and August the cove still fills: set out before 8am to find space.
The cove has an organised section with sunbed and umbrella hire, and a free section. The water is deep even close to the shore: less suitable for very young children. The beaches of the Gargano between Manfredonia and Vieste describes the stretch of coast that includes Vignanotica in detail.
Baia dei Campi and Baia San Felice
Continuing towards Vieste you come across Baia dei Campi and Baia San Felice: two bays with sheltered water, less exposed to the wind than the more open coves. Both have an organised section and a free section. Baia San Felice is famous for the natural rock arches. Worth seeing even just for the photos.
