The Gargano cliffs: where the sea is still wild

August 2025

The white cliffs of the Gargano

The Gargano is not just beaches. It's a coastline that behaves like a wild beast, mood-shifting with the tides, hiding caves and hideaways where the sea has never stopped being absolute ruler. The white cliffs are the wild heart of the region. We at Casa e Bottega spend entire summer days gazing at that coast, and every time we find something new.

White limestone and the geology of beauty

The Gargano cliffs are made of limestone — the same material that forms fossil dinosaurs, shells, chalk. Limestone is porous, breathes with the sea, changes colour with daylight. In the morning, the cliffs are almost transparent, almost pink. At noon, they're blindingly white. At sunset, they turn yellow, then orange, then red. At night, under the moon, they're grey like a ghost of themselves.

Sea caves and hidden coves

Gargano beach

The Emerald Cave, the Bell Cave, the Arch of San Felice: geographical addresses where the sea hides treasures. The Emerald Cave is reachable by boat, where the water is so transparent it seems you're inside a liquid emerald. The Arch of San Felice is a natural rock arch carved by the sea over millions of years.

Reaching hidden coves: by boat or on foot

In summer, in Manfredonia, Vieste and Peschici you'll easily find tour operators who take you around the caves. Alternatively, coastal trails require physical fitness and hiking boots but reward you with views no tour operator shows.

Snorkelling among the dark rocks

If you bring a mask and snorkel, you'll discover an underwater world that changes your understanding of beauty. The Gargano sea in July is transparent to ten metres depth. You'll see underwater cliffs covered in red algae, fish passing like birds in flight, purple sea urchins, starfish.

Practical tips for safe cliff exploration

The cliffs are dangerous if you're distracted. Limestone is crumbly with sharp edges and unforgiving. Always stay back from the edge. Watch for currents — along cliffs they're strong and change speed suddenly. We at Casa e Bottega recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Bring water, sun cream, hiking shoes, and a sense of reverence: the cliff is not your playground.
